Muchmore U.K. Rugracers Round 5 07-02-10.
Race reporter Mark Young.

We were back at Wodson Park for Round 5 in Febuary. There was an unfortunate clash with another winter series this month, but the hard core Rugracers were all back to do battle on track. Sadley this mean't we missed out on the awsome speed of the mod drivers. So with four heats of TC3 and three heats of TC2 the atmosphere in the pits was more relaxed. As Malc Hall was fresh back from the Snowbirds meeting in the USA and had smuggled a very sore throat through customs, the drivers briefing was short and to the point, thankfully.
With the chance for some of the other front runners improving on their previous Rounds points and results, this was still going to be a tough meeting. Philip Randall had already sewn up the TC3 Championship after the last Round but was not prepaired to rest on his lorals and was back in attendance to try and further improve his points tally, would he be able to? Read on..

The track.

Another excellent track was layed the night before by the tireless efforts of the HRCC crew, whom without this series would not be possible. We had the usual 32m straight which lead into the sweeper at the end, this was followed by two 180 degree turns from right to left, then it was full speed around the right hand corner bend and down a short straight, around another 180 degree corner which took you through the first chicane which then sweept to the left into the tight chicane and back onto the straight to complete a very fast lap.

In the Pits.

As there was more room this time around we were all pleased to be able to spread out a bit more than usual. Some drivers had invested overseas and got their hands on the new IP 5000mah 50c Lipos. Not much else to report this month, other than some lucky pit areas that had decided that as it was so cold outside they would bring along fan heaters, which brought the temperature up nicely at my end of the hall, thank you ;)

Qualifying.

We had the usual two practice slots which were a bit longer due to the absence of the mod drivers this month after which it was time to get down to business with the qualifying, so here we go...

TC3 Qualifying.

Round 1.
For Philip Randall it was business as usual at the front, to be the best of the rest in Round 1 on a 26/311.88 a good start to the day. Matthew Worton just missed out on the 26 lap club by less than half a second on a very quick 25/ 300.49 so would be looking to join in Round 2. Malcolm Hall came home third on 25/ 307.38 followed by several others who were getting used to the track conditions with many of them on quick 25 lap times.

Round 2.
Philip further improved on his Round 1 time by just over 3 seconds on 26/ 308.78. Dave Ledger who had been to a few previous meetings was back after a few months off to regroup and what a usefull rest that proved to be by posting a new FTQ of 26/ 311.77 so could we have a new challenger for Philip at this Round. Mark Buonaiuto posted a 25/ 307.10 pushing Malc further down the leader board a putting himself firmly in the A. But with the grip at its best anything could happen in the final qualifyer.

Round 3.
With Dave taking FTQ in Round 2 the pressure was on Philip to perform and that he did by further extending his lead by a massive 5 seconds on a very quick 26/ 306.60. Matthew pushed all to try and improve but had some bad luck with backmarkers but still posted a quick second place time of 25/ 301.68. Malcolm shaved a few more seconds off of his PB with a 25/ 305.47 so was happy to be third across the finish line.

TC2 Qualifying.

Round 1.
Ricky Copsey was here on business today to try and wrap up the top spot and become TC2 Champ. He started his day off as he meaned to go on posting the first FTQ for 10.5 of the day on a 26/ 303.60. Richard King was not far behind on a 26/ 305.24 with Paul Pinkney 3rd on 26/ 308.87 so it was going to be a very close day for the 10.5 drivers now that everyone has got used to the speed of this class and found near perfect set ups for all of their chassis's on the high grip carpet.

Round 2.
Ricky took it easy in leg 2 judging from the result being a couple of seconds slower on a 26/ 305.14 but I'm sure that was not the case on the track as Richard was chasing him hard to finish on a 26/ 308.31 with Ashley Wiffen a further 3 seconds behind him on 26/ 311.21. With one round left to go could Ricky improve and hold on to his lead?

Round 3.
Yes is the resounding answer. Ricky upped a gear in Round 3 to be the only driver to post a sub 26 lapper on a 27/ 311.13. Ashley just missed out but posted an excellent 26/ 301.46 with Scott Morton improving to secure an A final place on a 26/ 305.05. With only 9 seconds covering the last eight in the A it was going to be a very fast paced final with anyone in with a chance of a podium place.

TC3 Finals.

Leg 1.
After some very close racing and times in qualy we were in for what can only be called a real humdinger of 3 leg finals. Dave Ledger won this first leg after some great driving through the field to finish on a quick 25/ 300.22 and in so beating Philip Randall by the narrowest of margins, who did a 25/ 300.47 with Malcolm Hall just under half the straight behind on 25/ 304.91. What a fantastic start and some very close racing by all.

Leg 2.
Matthew Worton decided that now was a good a time as any to prove he could do a 26 lapper and did it in fine style by winning Leg 2 on 26/ 307.75 by powering down the inside of Philip to the finish line and just easing past him, which if this was horse racing would have had to be a photo finish it was that close, with an out break of claps and whistles from the onlooking crowd. Philip was unlucky not to win this leg after such a good drive and posted a 26/ 307.76, I said it was close. Ori Sohachevsky also improved in this leg on a 26/ 311.90 and was 3rd.

Leg 3.
After having a bad secong leg Dave made up for it by yet another win on 25/ 303.31 thus taking the overall win and a well deserved one at that. Malcolm came home a very close second on 25/ 304.41 but no Matthew line dash for him, but a 3rd overall postion was a solid finish to the day. Ori Sohachevsky posted a 25/ 305.80 to finish 3rd in this last leg and 4th overall, not a bad job from 9th on the grid. Championship winner Philip had problems only finishing 9th but had already done the hard work to finish 2nd overall. Well done to you all.

TC2 Finals.

Leg 1.
Ricky Copsey secured his first leg win with a fine drive to furthe improve on his FTQ time on a 27/ 306.20. Darren Lee had been at a previous meeting at Round 3 but had not done that well only finishing 4th in the B Final but that was in the past as today he had found his form by posting a very fast 26/ 300.54 to finish 2nd. Richard King was 3rd across the finish line on a 26/ 309.55.

Leg 2.
Darren had certainly got to grips with the track which was obviously to his liking, he put in a fine run to win leg 2 on a 27/ 310.36 with Ricky hot on his bumper on a 27/ 310.77. Russell Williams had took the plunge and paid a visit to Rugracers, so must have been happy with a 3rd in leg 2 on a 26/ 306.05. With 1 leg remaining Ricky would be looking for the win but with Darren on a high it was anyones to win or lose.

Leg 3.
Not putting your money on Ricky would have been a grave mistake, as he took the leg win on a 27/ 311.26 and with it the overall win for the day and the TC2 Championship. Paul Pinkney improved his points haul by crossing the finishing line on a 26/ 304.31. With a very happy Darren in 3rd on a 26/ 304.74 which gave him 2nd overall and a huge smile on his face all the way home. Well done to you all.

Meeting summary.

In TC3 Philip Randall is our Champion, with Malc Hall wrapping up second place at this round.
The fight for 3rd place is well and truely still on with Matthew Worton and Dean Osbon both joint on 773 points each so the last round will be very interesting to watch as both of these drivers are very quick and competant and either could take that last place on the podium.

As for the TC2 class Ricky Copsey is now offically the TC2 Champion with an uncatchable lead. Congratulations to Ricky on an excellent haul of points over the winter months which came from some very fast driving and of course skill, well done.
This leaves us with a battle for the last two places on the Championship podium between Paul Pinkney on 777 points and Ashley Wiffen on 773 points, this will be another great race to watch at the last round which is on 14-03-10, you'd be mad to miss it.

With less drivers in attendance we managed to wrap things up in super quick time this month, even after practice, three rounds of qualifying and three finals for all, we were still finished and the track packed away around 5pm, fantastic. This mean't we would see daylight on the way home, always a bonus with winter racing.

Well until next time, C U Trackside;)
