Sat 10th July - Saturday 10th July 2010 - Much-More UK Irish GP - Ballymoney, NI
The day started bright if a little damp from some overnight drizzle but this quickly disappeared during the Superpole round. Those going out in the first of the randomly generated Superpole heats opted for treaded tyres following the announcement from race control that the track was declared wet. Come heat 3 the superb surface of the Ballymoney circuit was rapidly drying and some quick times were on the boards from many drivers.
The 3 rounds of round by round qualifying consisted of 5 heats, sorted from the previous superpole best 3 consecutive laps, the same format is used at each of the 3 rounds in the Much-More UK GP series. All qualifying rounds were run during dry, sunny conditions and the level of grip on the control tyre was impressive and consistent over several runs, most drivers were discussing their strategy and saving their second set for the finals.
Much-More UK and Associated TC5 driver Alan Bickerstaff dominated the top heat of qualifying with nobody really challenging his pole position, which is where he eventually lined up (full results below).
In the lunch break between qualifying and the 2 leg finals, the clouds darkened and the water started to fall from above, first very light causing a lot of action in the pits changing from slicks to wets and vice versa! Eventually all racers opted for their wet options, this proved a good move as the rain got heavier. One victim of this was Mr. Bickerstaff who's motor failed in the middle of the first leg of the finals which gifted the rapid Mi4 of Graham Kenny the win.
All together a very good meeting, enjoyed by all and the weather didn't dampen any spirits. It's now time to enjoy a different layout for Sunday's modified event which promises some high speed, close racing.
